Energy saving tips
Switch to your Energy Provider’s Internet Tariff
This could save you up to 10% over a standard tariff, pay by monthly direct debit and opt for paperless bills by having your bills emailed to you for even more savings.

Dual-fuel v Separate Gas and Electric
By switching to an online energy provider of Dual-fuel (Gas and Electric from the same energy provider) can often be the cheapest way to receive your energy, but never assume that this is always going to be the cheapest tariff.   It is worth taking the time to compare the tariffs from separate Gas and Electric providers to see if you can make further savings.

Pay by Monthly Direct Debit
Studies show that paying your energy bill by ‘fixed monthly Direct Debits’ can save you as much as 5-10%.
Your bill is worked out on a fixed estimate each month. But remember under estimating will result in you owing your energy provider at the end of the year.   Likewise, you are entitled to a refund for any over-payments you have made to your energy bill.

Do your own meter reading
Every time you receive a bill, do a meter reading.   If you are being under billed, you will find yourself having to pay a hefty bill at the end of the year.   Or, if you are being over billed, then your energy provider will be banking your cash.
From your meter reading you will be able to help your energy provider make a more accurate estimation of your energy usage.   Relay these meter readings to your energy provider and request a change or use an online account which allows you to enter your own meter reading.   If you are still not satisfied try the Ombudsman Services for Energy as you have a range of rights to ensure that your bills are correct.
Alternatively, you could simply cancel the monthly direct debit and your energy provider should refund you with your overpayment, according to the statutory consumer focus group Consumer Focus ‘Consumers can also cancel a Direct Debit at any time.’
CAUTION your energy price will rise without a direct debit, so compare prices of other energy providers to see if you can switch and start saving.

Economy 7 tariffs
Economy 7 has two pricing structures, one for the day and one for the night, the night time rate being much cheaper than that of the day rate.
To work with this tariff efficiently set your appliances such as washing machines, dish washers etc to come on during the night using the appliance’s own delay timer or buy some timer plugs.
Remember you can still compare prices for Economy 7 tariffs and if you find a better tariff, switch and start saving.

Stay away from Prepayment meters if you can
If possible switch to a billed meter and start paying for your energy by Direct Debit, you may have to pay for this but the savings make it worth it.
Remember you can still compare for Prepayment meter and if you find a better tariff, switch and start saving.
